Italian: i Trulli - 122 East 27th Street (Park Avenue South & Lexington Avenue)

A rustic, but upscale, Italian place with a welcoming environment (wood-burning oven, fireplace, heated garden). The noise level stays reasonable at all times, making it good for business or a date, but also works equally well for groups of six. The menu is fairly standard Italian fare, but great quality (especially the pastas). They've opened a nice enoteca (wine bar) right next door which serves a limited menu and an extensive selection of Italian wines.
